Pursuing Peace

Peace can be a tricky thing, but over time I’ve learned that the only way we will be able to truly feel peace is if we put it in something constant; something we can rely on, trust in, and have complete confidence in. No matter what walk of life you are in, you are no stranger to failure. There have been many times in your life where you have failed, and where you have felt the effects of another’s failures. Perhaps you’ve gone back on a promise, told a white lie, or (whether intentionally or not) hurt someone in some way shape or form. To add on to this list, there are environmental and cultural failures. We are failed by our jobs, the weather, the government, our health and the list goes on. Failure of some kind is inevitable. So, if we seek peace from any of these things, it is guaranteed that one day or another the stress will arise, anxiety will break through, depression will hit, and sickness will come. If the world is going to fail us, what can we find peace in that won’t? Jesus.

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV).

There has not been a single day in time where His character has changed or faltered. Just because the world around us fails does not mean God has lost control. Our world is broken - Jesus offers restoration. Our world needs healing - Jesus offers healing for our souls. Our world is plagued by evil and death - Jesus conquered sin & death at the Cross. Our world is constantly changing - Jesus is the same yesterday, today and FOREVER. I am praying that for those of you who do not seek peace from Jesus, that your heart would be softened towards Him. He can do for you what nothing else in this universe can. Allow Him to bring restoration to your soul and peace to your heart. Let the Word of God saturate your mind with its truth so that you can have an anchor amidst the storms of life. I promise you friend, you won’t regret it.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you" (Philippians 4:8-9 ESV).

Here are a few ways you can start pursuing peace right now:

  • Believe that the Lord is our Shepherd and in Him we lack no good thing.

  • Believe that in Jesus our future is secure.

  • Take every thought captive. Do not let the lies of the enemy take control of your mind.

  • Focus your mind on the blessings in your life right now and make a list of them.

  • Start keeping a prayer journal where you can write out your anxious thoughts and surrender them to the Lord.

  • Prioritize time spent in the Word and let that saturate your mind.
